Christmas Cooking and Bone Broth For The Dogs

Christmas is over. The presents are all distributed and unwrapped. And things are settling back down from the holidays. Only one more to go for 2018!

I spent my Christmas day cooking and hanging out with the kids and dogs. It was really nice to not have to go anywhere. It was wonderful having both my kids in one place again after 3 months of having them spread out across the country. I hope that everyone else had a great Holiday with friends and/or family too!!

So I baked a big ham with the bone in it yesterday. I was cleaning up after all the eating was done and I almost (almost) threw the scraps of ham and the bone away.  You never want to give a dog or cat a cooked bone – they will splinter easily and could cause your pet to choke.  I stopped myself just in time to save it and throw it in the crockpot to make some bone broth for the dogs.   They didn’t really get anything for Christmas this year and I just know they will really enjoy the broth on their kibble!

One of my goals for next year is to give the dogs more whole foods.  So I thought, why not start today??

So I poured all the yummy juices and the bone with little bits of meat still on it in a medium-sized crock pot and added enough water to submerge the bone completely.  Then I turned the crock pot on the low setting.  After about an hour, I added about 1.5 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (this pulls out all the vitamins and minerals that are in the bone marrow and helps the broth to congeal a bit).  That was it!  I left it to cook overnight.

This morning, I took the pot out of the cooker and put it on the stove to cool while I got ready for work.  Before I left the house this morning, I put the pot in the fridge.  When I get home tonight, the fat should have separated from the broth and the meat should fall right off the bone.  I will throw the bone and the fat away and divvy up the broth into 2 cup containers and put them in the freezer.  For a treat, I will thaw out the broth and pour it over the dogs’ kibble.

Do you ever make broth for your dogs and cats?  Broth is a great, nutrient-dense, easy addition to kibble that you can quickly add.  Give it a try and let me know how it went!!

WARNING:  Today I learned that ham is not a good option to add to your dog’s food.  Ham is a highly processed meat and is very high in sodium, which can be dangerous to your dog.  Of course, if your dog gets a small bite it won’t be fatal to them.  Ham is just not something you want to add or feed on a regular basis.  I would like to apologize for not researching it more before sharing with you.  Terri.
