Day 3 – Leftover Ham

WARNING:  Today I learned that ham is not a good option to add to your dog’s food.  Ham is a highly processed meat and is very high in sodium, which can be dangerous to your dog.  Of course, if your dog gets a small bite it won’t be fatal to them.  Ham is just not something you want to add or feed on a regular basis.  I would like to apologize for not researching it more before sharing with you.  Terri.

Today I used some of the Christmas Ham that was getting a little bit too old for me to eat.  Since it is cooked and dogs stomachs are a little more stout than humans, I gave them about 1/4 cup each.  They loved it!!

I just diced up the little bit that was left and put it right in their bowls.

You may be wondering what to do with the food that you have left over.  For instance, the butternut squash that I put in the dog’s food yesterday.  There was a lot more there than I would want to give them all at once.  You can do a few different things with the extra:

  1.  You can give a little bit to the dogs each day;
  2. You can make something for yourself with the extra;
  3. You can freeze it for use later.

I went searching for a recipe that used roasted butternut squash.  Click here to see what I found.  I didn’t really like the finished product from the recipe so I tweaked it a bit and added some honey and pecans.  It was much better that way.  I think that had I planned better, I would have made this instead.

The point is that you can feed your dogs a less spicy, less fat version of the same things you are eating – so long as you have done your research to make sure it won’t harm your dog.   Remember the closer the foods are to their natural, whole state, the better.  Processed food is not good for us or them.

Have you experimented with any of the foods I have tried?  Does your dog like what you are giving them?  I had one dog that didn’t like the butternut squash.  He just ate around it.  He is kind of a picky eater.  He doesn’t like raw meat!!  He looks at me with this “What the hell is in my bowl?!” look every time I have tried to feed him raw meat.  He cracks me up.  Everyone else loves everything I have tried so far.
